I have cancer

Today for the first time I said it out loud. "I have cancer." It was a scary sentence to say, even though now I've said it 3 or 4 times.

I don't want cancer to be what defines me. I have so much else in my life. I have great family & friends, I have a God who loves me, I have a hope for the future.

I don't want to be a person defined by the worst of her, but the best.

EDIT: So here's what I'm asking, in my selfish, ego-seeking state. Leave me a comment, heck , leave me 15, and tell me what you know of me that best defines me. When I get sad and teary-eyed, I want to know that there are lots of things about me that you think are the best.

Thanks!

I can't say I know you well but I first think of your hospitality in a sense that you have a warm personality that makes people around you feel welcomed and at ease. I enjoy that about you! There is also a refreshing openness and honesty I enjoyed in conversations with you.

You always have a smile and a hug for me at church. I love spending even a few minutes with you because it always brings a smile to my face.

One of my very favorite things about you is that you give the best hugs EVER. No wimpy little half-hugs for Amy Drake. Your hugs always make me think that you're happy to see me and that you really care. You also have a fabulous laugh, and you tell great funny stories. You drove to Waco just to have a Ninfarita with me. Every time I see you, you're smiling. I know it's hard to smile right now, but friend, this is completely in God's hands. He knows what you're going through, he knows what's going to happen. He also has given you lots of friends who love you and will help you get through this.

I'll e-mail you about this later, but I do some work with the American Cancer Society. They have lots of really great free services...when you're feeling a little better, we'll talk.

I love you, friend.

Amy Drake, Amy Drake can I just say you are one of the most loving and caring friends anyone needs! Your heart is overfilled with joy and love towards everyone you are around. It's very uplifting to be around you. There has never been a time that I have not felt welcomed around you. When you put your mind to something, you work hard at it and succeed. You are there when anyone calls you. Even like at a last minute babysitter in Dallas for Kellen and mine rehearsal dinner. What would we of done with out you. I honestly couldn't of thought of anyone who would of done a great job like you did. Addy and Krista absolutely LOVE you!!! And what about your dog Chipper... That stayed at the Fields for a little bit and then now that is our favorite dog name in our house. You have worked so hard at getting into shape and look Amazing now!!! Your love for kids is one of a kind. You have a warm and tender heart. The Lord has made you SPECIAL to many. We Love you Amy!!!

Listen...let's talk about Chipper. Chipper was ALWAYS "on loan" to see if the Fields had the stamina to handle him. obviously- we failed. LOL

Amy,
You are a blessing to everyone you come in contact with. You really are. You have the sweetest, kindest spirit. You are always so giving and thoughtful (I mean, come on... who else would volunteer to "babysit" 20 kids in a hotel room for a friends' rehearsal dinner???? You obviously didn't see ME in that room... and 2 of the kids were MINE!!!!!)

You always have time for others and you always put others' needs before your own. ANd I have to agree about the hugs! I miss you sitting up front w/ us at church cause I don't get my Amy hugs! They are like several doses of Prozac!:)

You are an amazing, down to earth woman, who loves the Lord and lets His love shine back through her. There is nothing fake or "pretend" about you. You are a real woman... a real woman of God... no pretenses, no holding back - you let your beautiful, selfless heart shine to all that meet you and we all LOVE you for it! You are very unique. You are truly a gift from God.

I love you dearly my friend!

i for one will always know you as Amy who gave me a shot at the new starbucks in waco. And years later telling me you didnt think i was going to last. but the example you set for me and opportunity you gave me to grow is something i will always remember. I am where i am today because of our paths crossing. the fact that i can call you up after too much time passing and pick right up where we left off is rare. you have permanence in your presence. you are true blue, Amy Drake.

My turn!
I learned the power of a walk from you ever since CC in HS. There is nothing like a good walk! To this day I share walks with the ones I love, as a way to process life. I love that no matter what or how long, we pick up where we left off and always are there for each other. That is friendship! I love that my kids love you and that you talk to them & know the value of listening to a child. I love that you can talk to anyone, anywhere and you make everyone's day better just having been there. I love that there is someone in this world that gets it when I rant about bad customer service. Someone out there knows what good customer service is!!! I love that we will always have Wilson Phillips, Milli Vanilli, Dirty Dancing, Blue Mountain, Cookies & Cream ice cream & frogurt. I love that there is more to you than anyone knows, I wish I was that mysterious. I can't believe I never knew about the twinkies!
And here is one thing I know, it's time for you to start writing & publishing... you have prize winning material in that heart of yours, that needs to be shared with the world. First children's books, then poetry, then a series of novels. There is so much more to your life than what you have unveiled thus far... This is simply a time to gather your thoughts and start fresh. You truly can do anything in life you can imagine. You are a brilliant student, a lifelong learner, a compassionate listener and the best "Aunt" in the world. Not to mention that you are truly an adventurous spirit & you have many paths to explore. I do believe with all my heart that you will be a mommy someday & you will upstage my best mommy moments and have the next Einstein, husband or not. This is just a speed bump, and you and I have been known to take speed bumps at high speed! I love you always & forever... I would not be the woman, friend/mommy I am today if you weren't in my life.

Oh, Miss Amy... AGD Daughter of mine... :-) I remember hours spent in my apartment at the Palms with you enjoying being able to use the phone in (relative) peace. (I know I've got pictures to prove it... somewhere...)

In all seriousness: you have one of the most open, caring souls I've ever known, and I miss just being able to sit down and gab with you like we did back in our days at CU. You also have an inner strength that I always envied, and your faith always carried you through the worst of times.

So, remember this, my friend: You may have cancer, but it doesn't, and never will, *have you.* There's a huge difference, isn't there?

Hang in there, and know that you've got all kinds of support from many, many miles away.

Love in E-Pi (always),

Your AGD Mom Kris

*Just another one of the single "teens" in the family
*Fun and outgoing
*Great massages
*So much fun to be around
*So smart
*You are so giving, I remember when you used to come to our house when we were little and you would babysit for the weekend.
*You are so driven and you can do whatever you put your mind to
***The only downside I can think of is that you left Presentation, right when I came, I really wanted to be in your 2nd grade class, but you left LS for SL.....you did set me up w/ a wonderful teacher, so I'll let you by with that one.....but the TWINKIE is still up in the air, since you lied to us when we interviewed EVERYONE in Turks!! LOL!! I love you so much, can't wait to come see you soon!
